Feminist Mantra Monday 10: Make Better
This week's mantra is short and sweet: Make better.
It's inspired by the name of this blog, whose story I explained in my first newsletter last week (sign up for that here!), and it's been my personal mantra for years.
I like this mantra, because it can lead you in two different directions, depending on which word you emphasize when reading it. You can make better and work to improve what you are making, or you can make better and work to improve how you make.
In 2017, I am focusing on the latter. I want to reflect on and dwell in the how and build routines, processes, and functions that fulfill and enrich everything I create.
I am hoping that this will also behoove my feminist political practice this year, as I work to understand the ways in which patriarchy impacts my relationship to making (for example, how can I think about my productivity without a capitalist relationship to production).
So all of that said, alongside this mantra I wanted to share a few ideas for ways to make better in 2017:
- Develop a morning routine that invites creativity into your day.
- Learn about social change and how it happens.
- Put in place personal policies against doing favors/labor/work that exhausts/weakens/stresses you.
- Create a budget and investment plan that lets you worry less about money and spend time/energy on other things.
- Sleep better.
How can you make better this year, friends? I'd love to hear your intentions.
