Feminist Mantra Monday 15: Break Routine
This weekend I snuck out of the city for twenty-four hours on a quick getaway up the coast. Sunday evening and Monday are normally when I make my weekly to-do lists and accomplish the bulk of the items, but this week I traded that work time for a leisurely drive with my partner, long hours at an art museum, and calming conversations with old friends.
I thought I would be stressed from losing what are normally my most productive hours in the week. As I drove back, I kept waiting for the anxiety to begin mounting and the stress of the week to come to set in. But instead I found myself feeling reinvigorated and refreshed. I brainstormed new ideas and found solutions to old problems.
Break Routine is about letting go of the reins every so often to step outside of your day-to-day life. This brief moment away allows you to recalibrate your mind and your heart and return to your work with more intention and new clarity.
For me, breaking routine often means leaving town, but it can be as simple as waking up early one morning rather than sleeping through the alarm, making coffee at home when you normally grab it on the run, or planning a special lunch date with a friend on a day you normally eat at your desk. This week try to do one thing that is outside your norm. Push yourself to give up a moment of work for a moment of reflection. Hit refresh and reset your spirit.
Let me know how you break routine, loves. I can't wait to learn from your ideas.
