Feminist Mantra Monday 26: Expand
For the past few weeks, I've been working on an essay about body image and all the ways society morphs the female experience of embodiment aka fucks up our relationships with our bodies.
One of the ideas I've been trying to explore in that piece is the obsession with growing smaller that gets placed on women from their pre-teen years when their bodies start to fill out. Rather than seeing that expansion of breasts and hips as powerful and life-giving (it is), somehow we get told that we need to shape, sculpt and constrict to stay small forever.
I know that not all women experience this in the same way or even experience it at all. But as a woman who has shifted between a size 8 and 14 and back again over the past five years, expanding and contracting has become a constant source of anxiety.
So this week's mantra is a reminder of how positive it is to expand, to fill yourself out and grow bigger, larger, downright huge if you like, not necessarily in your body, but in your heart, mind and spirit. Women are taught to take up less space, but what if we demanded more? Take up all the space you can find today, babes. Make yourself an ocean. Let me know where your current takes you.
